“Sometimes words are not enough to express what we are feeling. Sometimes there are too many words. Art Therapy is a way of gaining a clearer understanding of ourselves by exploring our thoughts and feelings. In art therapy we express ourselves by making images or sculptures” www.iacat.ie
Sarah-Jayne provides a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment where the client chooses how to express him/herself. As image making is a non-verbal form of expression, art therapy can be useful for those who are struggling to verbalise how they are feeling. A range of art materials is provided and the client is invited to explore the materials and to make images. The art therapist does not interpret images; rather the client is encouraged to explore their own images and image making process to enlighten themselves to the meaning of their images.
You do not need to be good at nor experienced in art to avail of art therapy. It is the process of making the image and not the final product that is of primary importance. You will not be taught art skills as you would in an art class, however you may find that your art skills improve over the period of time that you attend art therapy. If you need help and ask for it, the art therapist will facilitate you in developing your art making skills as a way of helping you to express yourself.
